Specially scheduled AHA Basic Life Support

Commissioned Corps Officers to help them
meet deployment readiness policy
requirements. Priority enrollment will be
given for active duty officers who need to
obtain BLS certification to meet basic
standards for readiness.
READ: Please be courteous to your fellow
officers. If you cannot attend a BLS
class which you registered for, please
cancel through the Learning Portal so that
the system can add another Officer on the
wait list.
If you are registering for a BLS RENEWAL
course but can’t find a date that works for
you, you CAN take an INITIAL course!
Course Description: The BLS for
Healthcare Providers Course is designed to
teach the skills of CPR for victims of all
ages (adult and pediatric) including
ventilation with a barrier device, bag-mask
ventilation, use of an automated external
defibrillator (AED), and relief of
foreign-body airway obstruction for the
responsive and unresponsive victim.

Additional Details
Project Open Hand (POH)
provides home-delivered meals and
nutritional education to homebound senior
citizens and low-income persons with chronic
diseases in the Atlanta area.
Volunteers support POH’s vision of
preventing disability and death from
nutrition-sensitive chronic diseases by
packaging and delivering 4,500 healthy meals
each day. POH has delivered 20 million
nutritious meals since 1988! Meal
packaging involves scooping meats, starches,
and vegetables into individual serving
trays, sealing trays with plastic, and
labeling them with nutrition
information. Meal delivery involves
driving your own vehicle along a designated
route to deliver meals, snacks, and
beverages to POH clients. Volunteering
at POH provides an excellent opportunity for
ACOA to perform a valuable community
service, collaborate with POH staff and
other volunteers, and interact with fellow
officers. For more information, see http://www.projectopenhand.org/
ACOA volunteers can select their preference
for either packaging meals on the food
assembly line or delivering meals to
clients.
Meal Packaging: We need 20 volunteers
to assist with packaging meals in the
kitchen. Family members and friends are
welcome to volunteer also. Children must be
at least 9 years old and accompanied by a
parent/guardian. Volunteer slots for meal
packaging will be filled on a first-come,
first-served basis; however, preference will
be given to ACOA members if we receive more
than 20 volunteers. Approximately 5–10
additional volunteers will be placed on a
waiting list to cover cancellations.
Meal Delivery: POH is always in need
of volunteers for meal delivery, especially
on Sundays. For meal delivery,
volunteers must drive their own vehicle and
find another adult volunteer to accompany
them (two adults per vehicle). Children of
any age are welcome to participate in meal
delivery as long as they are accompanied by
a parent/guardian. Driving routes will
be supplied by POH and usually take 2–3
hours. There is no limit on the number
of volunteers for meal delivery (these are
in addition to the 20 meal packaging
volunteers). The arrival time for
drivers will be confirmed at a later date,
but will likely be between
8:45–10:00am.
RSVP: Please contact LCDR Emily Jentes
(ejentes@cdc.gov) and LCDR Tegan Boehmer
(tboehmer@cdc.gov) by Tuesday, April 30 to

Bone Marrow Registry Drive (May 9, 2013)
Date
Thursday, 9 May, 2013
Time
10am – 2pm
Location
CDC; Corporate Square
Campus*; Bldg 1.; Lobby
Point of Contact
Please contact CDR Raine
Alexander for more information about the
drive at Corporate Square Campus:
lfa9@cdc.gov.
Additional Details
There are 3 simple steps to
be placed on the registry (no needles!):
1. Screening and health
consent form
2. Swab the inside of your
cheek.
3. Remain on the registry
until you are 60 years old
Who may volunteer: ACOA officers and CDC
employees to include civilian employees
(FTEs and contractors), ages 18 through 44.
We especially are in need volunteers of
diverse racial or ethnic backgrounds.
Why volunteer? Each year more than 10,000
patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other
life-threatening diseases discover they need
a marrow or cord blood transplant but have
no donor match in their family. Less
than half receive the transplants they need
and therefore depend on a complete stranger
to sign up on the Be the Match® registry to
help give them a second chance at
life. On average, only one in every
540 members of registry in the United States
will go on to donate bone marrow or
peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) to a
patient. The more members on the registry
the more lives will be saved.
For more information on bone marrow
donation, click here to visit Be the Match
website or come to the drive and learn more
For more information on COA’s commitment to
“Give-a-Life” click here
* ACOA will hold additional drives at each
campus throughout this year. Watch the
listserv for your campus dates and more
opportunities to volunteer.

Café 458 Sunday Brunch
A Program of the Atlanta Center for Self
Sufficiency
(6 volunteers needed for this entire time
period)
We have a great opportunity for Commissioned
Corp Officers to serve up some hotcakes and
Southern food for a great cause. Six
volunteers are needed to assist as kitchen
helpers, dishwashers, servers, and hosts at
Café 458's Sunday brunch. ACOA members
will be given priority to volunteer and all
volunteers must be 18 or older. No
prior restaurant experience is needed.
Café 458 is open to the paying public on
Sundays from 10am until 3pm with all
proceeds benefiting the Atlanta Center for
Self Sufficiency (ACSS). “Café 458 is a
life-stabilization program and restaurant
for homeless men and women. Café 458
provides daily meals, case management and
support services, which help our guests
achieve personal goals that lead to
self-sufficiency.” For more information,
see: http://atlantacss.org/page/1036/Caf%C3%A9-458
This activity can be counted under the
"officership" benchmark for promotion
purposes. Volunteers will be provided with a
thank you letter at the end of the year from
ACOA that can be included in your
eOPF. Not to mention, the chef always
cooks up some delicious grub for all the
volunteers.
